Construction has begun in Antarctica for the British Antarctic Survey, with specialists arriving at Rothera Research Station to progress several projects to secure the future of polar operations and research. In a first for the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme, some of the construction team, along with BAS team members, will be working through the Austral or Antarctic winter, known as “wintering.” This will see eight construction team members stationed at Rothera for seven months during Antarctica’s winter season from May through November, in which some periods are spent in 24-hour darkness, with harsh polar weather. The season will see the … Read more
Construction Seasons Begin at Antarctic Research Hub
A 20-person-plus team is working on the second season of building a new science and operations building located in Antarctica. Construction can only take place during a short window during the Antarctic summer months, avoiding the harsh, dark winter. This season, the team aims to complete the pre-cast concrete foundations, ground floor slab, rock anchors and stub columns, as well as drainage and the perimeter wall, before returning in December to complete the outer structure. The scientific support facility, named the Discovery Building, commemorates the discovery of Antarctica just over 200 years ago. Facilities in the new two-story 4,500-square-meter building … Read more
Antarctic Wharf Ready for RRS Sir David Attenborough Polar Research Vessel
For the first time, polar ships have moored at a new £40 million wharf at British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. The RRS James Clark Ross used it to re-supply the station and pick up staff for return to the UK. Construction partners and designers of the wharf, BAM, with the support of Sweco and technical advisors Ramboll, completed a second, six-month construction season, during the Antarctic austral summer. Turner & Townsend also provided cost management for the project. The new wharf, which replaces a smaller structure built in the 1980s, is part of the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme, … Read more
