The Ed. Züblin AG, a subsidiary of the listed European construction group STRABAG SE, was commissioned to plan and implement the new construction of the Bertolt Brecht School in Nuremberg, Germany. The contract amount is € 108 million and the construction period is scheduled from November 2018 to November 2021.
The cooperative school center consists of a municipal high school, a municipal secondary school and a state middle school. With its sports classes, the BBS is a so-called “partner school of competitive sports” and was awarded as the Elite School of Sports (German Olympic Sports Federation) and Elite School of Football (German Football Association).
“The school buildings were planned to be the lowest-energy buildings with very high self-supply coverage through renewable energies,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE. The energy supply is predominantly via remote and geothermal energy. The latter is used both for heating and cooling; this is made possible by geothermal probes with a drilling depth of about 90 meters. The electricity needs of the school are covered by eco-electricity.
The Bertolt Brecht School can accommodate around 1,800 pupils in grades 5-12. The monolithic school complex is to be built on three floors and comprise four blocks of buildings offset from one another. It is surrounded by leafy grounds, which are divided into different functional and residential areas. In the east of the school grounds there is a 7-speed sports hall. The gross floor area of the school will be approx. 28,000 square meters; the sports hall is about 10,700 square meters.
