Representatives from Argenteuil Hospital, in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France, have awarded a contract to a consortium of prime contractors and construction companies led by Bouygues Bâtiment Ile-de-France, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, to consolidate and modernize its hospital facilities. Infrastructure work has already begun on this major project, which will create a single modern, high-performance 77,000-square-meter building.
By 2030, the New Argenteuil Hospital will consist of a single building housing most of the existing care activities spread across different buildings on the hospital site, enabling resources to be pooled, pathways for healthcare staff to be rationalized and the range of treatments offered to patients to be improved.
The project, which was devised by the Brunet Saunier & Associés agency with the assistance of BaSo Architectures, will be developed in two major phases over a six-year period. The first phase consists of a 30,000-square-meter extension to the east of the existing Madeleine Brès building, which will be completed in April 2027. The second phase, adding approximately 28,000 square meters to the west of the building, is due for completion in July 2030.
The project involves the creation of an emergency department capable of handling 100,000 emergency admissions per year, the creation of more than 500 beds and places and an upgraded level 3 maternity unit. In addition, the intensive care and critical care departments will be grouped together on the same platform to make it easier to receive patients in the event of a public health crisis.
Externally, the project will be part of an urban redevelopment that will include 7,000 square meters dedicated to nature, in accordance with BiodiverCity certification. Dedicated lanes will also be created to facilitate the flow of emergency services, the public and staff. Car parking will be improved, with a substantial increase in the number of parking spaces to 1,400 by 2030.
At peak times, 250 site workers will be engaged on the project. Twenty percent of subcontracted work will be awarded to SMEs and craftsmen, creating an opportunity to develop the local economic fabric. In addition, the consortium intends to offer local people the benefit of a social integration scheme, representing 5% of hours worked onsite, enabling beneficiaries to gain professional experience through training, mentoring schemes and onsite work.
The New Argenteuil Hospital project is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of construction, with measures taken in several key areas:
- Reusing existing emergency infrastructures and part of the Viguié building, thereby saving 3,200 tons of concrete
- Using bio-sourced materials, particularly for external joinery
- Reusing, repurposing and recycling materials in situ:
o 97% of materials from demolition will be recycled
o asphalt from the site will be recycled and reincorporated into new roads
o false floor slabs will be reused in specific technical rooms
o gravel and existing concrete slabs will be reused on the terraces of new buildings
o roof tiles will be recycled as mulch
The consortium will be led by Bouygues Construction, in conjunction with Inéo and Axima (subsidiaries of Equans) for electrical, HVAC and plumbing work packages and Premys (a subsidiary of Colas) for demolition.
