Balfour Beatty and 50/50 joint venture, Gammon, has been awarded a four-year HK$12.88-billion contract for the expansion of terminal 2 at Hong Kong International Airport, by the Airport Authority Hong Kong. Construction Complete on 1st All-Timber Building in UK’s King’s Cross
Construction of the King’s Cross Sports Hall, a community sports center and gym, located at the northeast edge of the 67-acre King’s Cross development, has now completed in London, England. BAM Construct UK served as general contractor on the project. The building, designed by Bennetts Associates alongside engineering company Arup, features an indoor sports hall and a health and fitness suite over two levels. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the construction industry hard, with nearly 1 million workers losing their jobs between March and April. The new issue of the CPWR Data Bulletin focuses on COVID-19’s economic impact on the industry from March to June 2020, including job losses, business closures and medical absences. Among the key findings: About 80% of small construction businesses experienced either a large or moderate negative impact, effects were disproportionately high for Hispanic workers and self-unincorporated workers and absences from work due to personal medical reasons initially rose 70%. ABC Honors Student Winners of 2020 Construction Management Competition
Twenty-six teams of undergraduate students from colleges and universities nationwide put their construction project leadership skills to the test during Associated Builders and Contractors’ annual Construction Management Competition, held virtually for the first time this month. The four-person teams, which were assigned to complete the same construction management project, received awards in five categories. The team from Florida International University won the overall competition, as well as first place in estimating and project management.
