National Science Foundation Awards Research Funding to Advance Performance-Based Fire Design for Cold-Formed Steel Structures

A research project progressing from the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Small Project/Fellowship Program has received significant funding through the National Science Foundation to advance performance-based fire design for cold-formed steel structures. Thomas Gernay, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, was named a recipient of the NSF’s Faculty Early Career Development Award for nearly $580,000 over five years. Market Report Reveals $97B in Additional Material, Labor Costs for Subcontractors in 2022

Billd has released its third-annual construction industry market report, the 2023 National Subcontractor Market Report: $97 Billion in Extra Weight on the Shoulders of America’s Subcontractors. Billd surveyed nearly 900 commercial construction professionals across the country, largely consisting of business owners and executives. The report indicates that subcontractors continued to bear the brunt of rising input costs for materials and labor in 2022 to the tune of $97 billion in unplanned expenses. Robins & Morton Completes Facilities Leased to Northrop Grumman

Robins & Morton and Corporate Office Properties Trust completed two build-to-suit facilities and a parking deck in Huntsville, Alabama, which have been leased by Northrop Grumman. The project team also included Powers Brown Architecture.   The two Class A tilt-wall buildings total approximately 260,000 square feet and each stand five stories tall.   Sitework and construction began in February 2021. The campus features executive office space, program management and engineering design space, a 15,000-square-foot hardware-in-the-loop integration lab, a 16,000-square-foot data center, a 350-person auditorium to facilitate classified program meetings and a 144,000-square-foot parking deck with nearly 400 spaces.   During … Read more

FMI Consulting Report Projects Continued Design-Build Growth

A report from FMI Consulting forecasts continued growth of design-build over the next three years, despite recent industry challenges and market volatility. FMI’s findings indicate that design-build is anticipated to account for 47% of construction spending and a 22.5% growth in total design-build spending by 2026. Building on FMI’s 2021 report on design-build utilization, the survey reexamined the industry following the challenges of the past three years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, labor shortages and supply chain issues.
