The University of Kentucky Student Center has achieved its certificate of occupancy from the state of Kentucky several months ahead of schedule. Turner Construction Company served as general contractor on the project. Despite the difficult weather this winter, the team collaborated with the architect, engineers, owner, maintenance department, building management team and Aramark to complete the space on time and ahead of schedule.
The Steel Erectors Association of America supports the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. The week-long focus on fall prevention will be held May 3-7. “The Stand-Down is an important initiative for erectors to get behind. SEAA encourages our members and other erectors to plan events at their jobsites,” said Geoff Kress, president of SEAA. The construction industry added 110,000 jobs in March, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The industry has added 931,000 jobs since April 2020, recovering 83.6% of the jobs lost during earlier stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The construction unemployment rate fell to 8.6% in March from 9.6% in February, but it is still 1.7 percentage points higher than in March 2020. The 47-floor Texas Tower, located in Houston, recently topped out. The project team includes Gilbane Building Company with team members from Hines Limited Partnership and Ivanhoé Cambridge and architect Pelli Clarke. The new tower will be an impressive addition to the Houston skyline and will total more than 1 million square feet. An expansion and renovation project is underway at Florida Heart Associates in Fort Myers, Florida. The project team includes Stevens Construction and PRA. Stevens Construction is providing a complete interior renovation of the two-story, 25,374-square-foot building, which includes an upgrade of all exam rooms, nurse stations, offices, lobby and the cardiac PET equipment. The general contractor is also expanding the existing building with the new construction of an ambulatory surgery center.
