Skanska has signed a contract to modernize and expand the Lafayette Elementary School in Washington, D.C. The total contract value is $72 million. Lafayette Elementary School, which serves nearly 700 students, was built in the 1930s, with an addition in the 1970s. The modernization will include the restoration of the existing schoolhouse façade, the total interior renovation of the 1930’s structures, a slight enlargement of the existing parking lot, renovation of all exterior play and field surfaces, green roofs and other storm water management features to meet the latest D.C. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Knutson Construction has been awarded the role of construction manager for the new Saint Paul College Health and Science Alliance Center project in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The HSAC will include a 39,000-square-foot addition and 5,400-square-foot renovation allowing more space for the growing health and science programs offered by Saint Paul College. The new space will feature a plumbing shop, business/industry and university center classrooms, sim labs and mechanical rooms on the lower and penthouse levels. Turner’s Fourth Quarter Building Cost Index Reflects Increasing Construction Activity
Turner Construction Company announced that the Fourth Quarter 2015 Turner Building Cost Index – which measures costs in the non-residential building construction market in the United States – has increased to a value of 959. This reflects a 1.05% increase from the Third Quarter 2015 and a 4.58% yearly increase from the Fourth Quarter 2014. Overall construction activity remained stable through the Fourth Quarter, with slight increases in the West, and greater increases in the South and Southeast. ABC Predicts Continued Growth for the Construction Industry in 2016
Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) forecasts a continued steady economic recovery for the U.S. commercial and industrial construction industries in 2016. Despite a weak global economy, the industry’s solid economic recovery in 2015 should continue in 2016, led by strong consumer spending. “As the mid-phase of the economic recovery continues, ABC forecasts growth in nonresidential construction spending of 7.4 percent next year along with growth in employment and backlog,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “The mid-phase of the recovery is typically the lengthiest part and ultimately gives way to the late phase, when the economy overheats. McCarthy Awarded Wharf 2 at Port of Houston
McCarthy was recently awarded the contract for the $38.7-million upgrade of Wharf 2 at the Port of Houston Authority’s Barbours Cut Terminal located in Morgan’s Point, Texas. Barbours Cut is considered to be one of the premier container handling facilities in the country. The project will upgrade the existing Wharf 2 to support larger wharf cranes that can accommodate post-panamax vessels.
